The particle physics community is taking a walk down the red carpet, and invites everyone to join in. In May, Sony Pictures Entertainment will release Angels & Demons, a major motion picture based on Dan Brown?s best-selling novel. Starring Tom Hanks and directed by Ron Howard, the film focuses on an apparent plot to destroy the Vatican using antimatter made at the Large Hadron Collider and stolen from the European particle physics laboratory CERN. Through a series of public lectures, scientists are using this opportunity to tell the world about the real science of antimatter, the Large Hadron Collider and the excitement of particle physics research. Across the United States and Canada, scientists from more than 30 colleges, universities and national laboratories will host public lectures as part of the event. Dr. Miguel Mostafa, a Professor at Colorado State University and an expert on ultra high energy cosmic rays, will present ?Angels & Demons : The Science Revealed? on Thursday, May 28th in the Columbine Room at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center. An informal reception will begin at 5pm, with the 40-minute lecture starting at 5:30pm followed by a question and answer session and refreshments. More information about the series, including a list of lectures and local contacts, is available at www.uslhc.us/Angels_Demons.

The Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art will present an exhibition that highlights the variety and quality of Fort Collins art collections. Fort Collins Collects, curated by FCMOCA?s Executive Director, Marianne Lorenz, demonstrates the breadth and depth of local collections and allows visitors a ?peek? into the lives and passions of the collectors. ?This exhibition has something for everyone,? says Lorenz, ?from mid-century decorative arts to old master drawings and contemporary sculpture, Fort Collins Collects should appeal to a variety of tastes and interests.?
The idea for the exhibition was born out of a routine visit by Lorenz to the home of Melissa Katsimpalis, who is the President of the FCMOCA Board:
?I was sitting in the living room and just as I was about to put my cup of tea down, I realized that the table next to me was a rare and important side table designed by Edward Wormley for Dunbar Furniture in the late 1950?s. I immediately recognized it from the signature Tiffany tiles that cover the table top. I began to wonder how many other treasures such as this are in the community and are worthy of sharing with our museum audiences?? said Lorenz.
Early in the process, Lorenz decided that objects chosen for the exhibition would not be limited to ?contemporary? fine or decorative arts. ?I wanted to include collectors who have a broad range of interests and tastes?I did not want to leave anything out because of the date a work of art was made?I wanted to include the best from an assortment of periods and art interests?I think this is what will make the show accessible to everyone?whether or not they are interested in contemporary art.?
Ultimately, the exhibition came to include some contemporary art ?gems,? such as a large Dave Yust painting from the collection of Gary and Carol Ann Hixon as well as a rare 19th century drawing by English artist Edward Francisco Burney from the collection of Larry Hartford and Torleif Tandstad.
