This program will convene once monthly to discuss books from the writer?s viewpoint. Unlike a regular book club, this class will use readings as a springboard to explore our own issues as writers. We?ll closely examine language, symbolism, theme, and the mechanics of writing in a way that will inform our own work. Part of class time will be used for writing exercises based on readings, as well as open discussion about general writing issues. For April 6th read: The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls. May and June readings will be determined democratically by the class.

Amy Kathleen Ryan earned her Master?s in English Literature from the University of Vermont, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from The New School in New York City. She has studied with such writers as Amy Hempel, Abigail Thomas, and Dale Peck. Amy is the author of Shadow Falls, a young adult novel that was called ?a rich and rewarding narrative? by Kirkus Reviews, and Vibes, which received a starred review from Publisher?s Weekly for its ?abundance of wit.? She has taught literature and writing at Lang College in New York, and at the Writer?s Voice at the Westside YMCA in Manhattan.
